Make a Scene WA

Elena Stecca is a filmmaker and project manager here at Children of the Setting Sun. She is also the owner, lead instructor and mentor at Make A Scene WA, a for-profit organization helping children find their creative voices through visual storytelling. Recently Make A Scene WA has partnered with CSSP and Cascadia International Women’s Film Festival to implement film curriculum into Lummi Nation School’s media program. Elena will work with students in grades 9-12 starting this month until Jun. She will be teaching them to create scripted short-films. Thank you Elena for empowering our youth and creating the next generation of filmmakers!

Young and Indigenous x Sasha LaPointe!

CSSPʻs Young and Indigenous Podcast interviews Coast Salish author, Sasha taqʷšəblu LaPointe from the Nooksack and Upper Skagit Indian tribes. Our podcast team met with her in her Tacoma home yesterday to discuss her book Red Paint: The Ancestral Autobiography of a Coast Salish Punk

“An Indigenous artist blends the aesthetics of punk rock with the traditional spiritual practices of the women in her lineage in this bold, contemporary journey to reclaim her heritage and unleash her power and voice while searching for a permanent home.”

Red Paint is the Whatcom Reads 2024 Selection! This marks the beginning of an exciting lineup of author events celebrating this outstanding work. Remember to mark your calendars for March 14th to 16th! Sasha will be right here in Whatcom County, leading a series of engaging readings, Q&A sessions, and writing workshops.
