CSSP Supports R.U.N in Unity Convening

CSSP filmed interviews with some of the incredible Indigenous leaders and speakers at the recent R.U.N. in Unity Convening. These Indigenous leaders are some of the same heroes and water warriors featured in Our Sacred Obligation and the continuation of The Salmon People Project such as Amy Cordalis (Yurok), Alyssa Macy (Warm Springs), Shannon Wheeler (Nez Pearce), Jay Julius (Lummi), JoDe Goudy (Yakama).

The R.U.N. in Unity Convening served as a gathering of partners and allies from the Northwest region, aiming to foster connections, harmonize voices, and devise effective strategies for safeguarding the water, orca, and salmon populations. This two-day event prioritized education, cultural sensitivity, and the exchange of innovative ideas to tackle the pressing challenges faced by these natural resources. The ultimate aim is to generate solutions and strategies that fortify the Northwest region, making it more resilient and sustainable.

Free Borsey, a Young Tribal Leader and member of the Young and Indigenous Podcast, participated in the convening’s youth panel and addressed the question: "What is your perspective on orcas, salmon, and the Salish Sea?"

Treaty Day Film Festival in January!

Save the Date: January 20th, 2024 at Pickford Film Center

Children of the Setting Sun’s 6th annual Treaty Day Film Festival (TDFF) is coming up! TDFF was created in remembrance of the 1855 Point Elliot Treaty. It is celebrated today to unify and educate the community on Indigenous perspectives and the issues we face today.

We’re excited to announce that the feature film this year is FRYBREAD FACE AND ME directed by Billy Luther! We’re so excited about all the films we’re showing this year and can’t wait to reveal more as we get closer to January 20th!

TDFF’s educational programming involves collaborations with Bellingham Public Schools. In the previous year, this partnership brought 600 7th grade students to the Pickford Film Center to view films aligned with the Since Time Immemorial mandate. The positive feedback prompted an expansion this year, extending the program to include 4th, 7th, and 11th graders across the district, reaching a total of over 2000 students!

To stay up to date on the latest TDFF information, be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram where we will be posting frequent updates.
