Join us to celebrate Earth Day!

Mar 25, 2025

"Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect." — Chief Seattle

Join us to celebrate Earth Day! On Tuesday, April 22nd, we will have food trucks, sustainable vendors and local environmental organizations on Bay Street in downtown Bellingham! The street will be closed to create a space for us to come together as a community, not just to discuss our challenges, but to celebrate our strength, our power, and our unity! Our amazing lineup of inspiring speakers and performers includes Takaiya Blaney (Tla’min), Gene Harry (Malahat Nation), Wayne Christian (Shuswap), and Bellingham's own Baby Cakes Band - We are the land, we are the water, and together, we rise!

Diabetes Alert Day

Diabetes Alert Day is TODAY, March 25th! This is a one-day “wake-up call” that focuses on the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of understanding your risk. In 2023, American Indian/Alaska Native adults were 1.5 times more likely than non-Hispanic white adults to be diagnosed with diabetes. So, what can we do?

As Indigenous people we can maintain our health through holistic approaches, utilizing natural resources and the knowledge that has been passed down through generations. These practices often align with the 13 lunar phases of the Indigenous calendar year.

As we move into April, Moon of the Whistling Robins occurs during the majority of the month. The sounds of bird song signals springtime. Greens, fish, and shellfish are harvested. Ironwood, also called ocean spray, is harvested and used for making a variety of hunting, fishing, and gathering tools, including fish spears, fish sticks for cooking, digging sticks, and long needles for sewing cattail mats. The activities in this moon focus on harvesting ironwood and the importance of clean water.

Children of the Setting Sun collaborated with the Swinomish People to create a video series corresponding to the 13 Moons Curriculum created by the Swinomish Community Environmental Health program. The goal was to create an informal and scalable model of environmental health education through the lens of first foods and resources. To learn more about the 13 Moons Cycle you can find our YouTube playlist here!
