As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let’s take a moment to recognize the incredible Indigenous women who are leading the charge in environmental protection and cultural preservation. Young & IndigenousHealing Women Heals Mother Earth is a podcast that highlights these trailblazers and the essential work they’re doing. This series dives into the unique role Indigenous women play in grassroots movements and high-level advocacy. It’s not just about their leadership—it’s also about the vital practice of self-care for these unstoppable changemakers. Three episodes are out now, hosted by Santana Rabang! Episode 4 coming soon!

CSSP Leaders Speak at WWU’s Land Stewardship Panel

On March 6th, Western Washington University Students for Ecological Restoration hosted by Alexandra Peck, highlighted the vital role of Coast Salish matriarchs in nurturing natural resources, asserting land rights, and fostering trade.

The event featured three impactful CSSP leaders. Free Borsey opened with a powerful song, while Raynell Morris shared her experiences as a caretaker for the land and orcas, reflecting on her leadership journey, including her role in the 1998 U.S. Presidential administration. Her story underscored the strength of women in leadership and their connection to protecting the land. Santana Rabang concluded by urging action to safeguard the land, water, and amplify the voices of women in these movements.

The evening sparked meaningful dialogue and reinforced the need for collective action to preserve the environment for future generations.

Support The Forests, Take Action

The Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP) Amendment Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) provides an opportunity for Tribes to influence how ancestral lands and critical ecosystems are managed. To assist in advocating for Tribal sovereignty, co-stewardship, and the integration of Indigenous Knowledge, CSSP worked with the NorthWest Forest Plan Federal Advisory Committee to develop a comprehensive template letter that outlines key concerns and recommendations.

Your voice is needed. Please submit your completed letter to the U.S. Forest Service by March 17, 2025.

In Case You Missed, Billy Frank Jr. Day

"Billy Frank Jr. liked to say I wasn’t a policy guy; I was a getting arrested guy, and that’s true—Billy was arrested over 50 times in his fight to protect tribal fishing rights and save the salmon that fed his family for generations." —President Barack Obama

Billy Frank Jr. Day (March 9) honors a warrior whose fight for Native rights shaped our future, and we are here today because of his dedication. Listen to this tribute from President Obama Speaks About Billy Frank Jr..

Billy’s legacy is a reminder that his struggle for justice is not forgotten. Next year, a statue in Washington, D.C. will honor his impact. In partnership with the Washington State Arts Commission, CSSP created this three part video: Billy Frank Jr.: The Artist, The Maquette, The Legacy.

Let us carry his work forward with grace, for this fight is not just for us—it’s for all people, for all generations.
